Established as a district in 1976 after separating from Saran, Gopalganj is recognized as one of Bihar's backward districts. The Gopalganj Parliamentary constituency, reserved for the Scheduled Caste category, includes six Legislative Assembly segments: Baikunthpur, Barauli, Gopalganj, Kuchaikote, Bhore, and Hathua.

 

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the constituency saw a competition among 13 candidates. Dr. Alok Kumar Suman of the JD(U) won with 568,150 votes, defeating Surendra Ram of the RJD, who received 281,716 votes. Additionally, 51,660 individuals chose the NOTA option, reflecting a portion of the electorate's dissent.
