Kolkata: At the Calcutta High Court on Monday, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju asserted that the State police, responsible for the arrest of Shahjahan Sheikh, the primary suspect in the Sandeshkhali unrest, is actively working to impede the investigation by colluding with the accused. This revelation unfolded during the hearing before a division bench headed by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya.
ASG SV Raju argued that the State police's deliberate actions cast doubt on the fairness of the investigation, raising concerns about potential biases in the process. The Sandeshkhali unrest case, marked by its sensitivity and involvement of influential individuals, has captured public attention.
The division bench had previously clarified that agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) or the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) were free to apprehend Shahjahan Sheikh, given the absence of specific orders to the contrary. However, the narrative took a twist with ASG SV Raju suggesting collusion between the accused and the State police, prompting questions about the integrity of the ongoing inquiry.
Responding to these allegations, the division bench expressed apprehension about the possible compromise of the investigation's integrity. It stressed the necessity of an impartial inquiry into the Sandeshkhali unrest and is now contemplating potential actions, including the transfer of the investigation to a central agency like the CBI.
The Sandeshkhali unrest case has been a cause for widespread concern due to reports of violence and political tensions in the region. Beyond its immediate impact, the case is being closely watched for the broader implications it might have on the political and social landscape of the area.
