Begusarai is one of the 40 Lok Sabha constituencies in Bihar and is known for being a stronghold of the Bhumihar community. Since independence, every winning candidate, except in 2009, has been from the Bhumihar community. This dominance is evident as, in the last 11 Lok Sabha elections, nine MPs elected have been Bhumihars. Begusarai was once considered the industrial capital of Bihar, with its factories giving trade unions significant political influence, leading to a strong presence of left-wing parties.

In the 2019 elections, BJP's Giriraj Singh won with 692,193 votes. CPI's Kanhaiya Kumar received 269,976 votes, while RJD's Tanveer Hassan garnered 198,233 votes.
