DGS Holds Fruitful Discussions with Scottish White Fish Producers Association (SWFPA) to Explore Employment Opportunities for Indian Seafarers

DGS met with Scottish White Fish Producers Association (SWFPA), Employment Opportunities for Indian Seafarers

In a significant step towards expanding employment opportunities for Indian seafarers, the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) recently engaged in productive discussions with Ms. Sharon Cooper from the Scottish White Fish Producers Association (SWFPA). Representing DGS, Deputy Director General Capt. Joseph Daniel actively participated in the talks. The discussions focused on exploring ethical practices for increasing the number of skilled Indian seafarers on fishing vessels, aligning with the requirements of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Fishing Vessel Personnel (STCW-F).

In addition to opportunities in the fishing sector, the dialogue also covered the potential for Indian seafarers to work on offshore sector vessels, requiring trained and competent personnel.

To further strengthen this collaboration, a joint workshop is being planned between DGS and SWFPA. The workshop will focus on highlighting employment opportunities available for Indian seafarers both in the fishing sector at sea and in shore-based operations such as fishing factories in foreign locations.

This initiative, spearheaded by DGS with Capt. Joseph Daniel's involvement, is expected to open new avenues for trained Indian seafarers, providing them with access to international employment opportunities while promoting ethical and sustainable practices within the industry.
