New Delhi, 8th December 2024: In light of the ongoing conflict in Syria, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India, has issued a stern advisory urging Indian nationals, including seafarers, vessel owners, and employers, to refrain from traveling to or operating in Syrian ports. This directive emphasizes the paramount importance of ensuring the safety and security of seafarers amidst the evolving geopolitical landscape.
Key Highlights of the Advisory:
1. Avoid Travel to Syria: Indian nationals are strongly recommended to avoid all travel to Syria until further notice, especially for seafarers and employers involved in maritime operations.
2. Reschedule Crew Changes: Seafarers are advised not to sign on or off from any Syrian port. Employers and vessel owners are encouraged to reschedule crew changes to alternative ports to mitigate risks. Any pre-existing obligations involving Syrian ports should be reconsidered and postponed immediately.
3. Restrictions for Stationed Seafarers: Seafarers currently stationed in Syria are urged to minimize movements and remain informed about the local situation. They should maintain close contact with the Indian Embassy in Damascus.
4. Berthing and Operations: Vessel owners and agents are advised to avoid berthing at Syrian ports due to the risks involved. Alternative ports for loading and unloading operations should be considered.
5. Security Measures: Vessel owners are encouraged to enhance on-board security, conduct safety drills, and ensure readiness to handle emergencies. All crew members should be briefed on the current advisory and updates from the Indian Embassy in Damascus.
