A 20-year-old panamax bulk carrier owned by Star Bulk, a NASDAQ-listed company, was targeted by Houthi militants today. The Star Iris came under fire twice within 20 minutes while passing through the Bab al Mandab Strait, heading southeast. AIS data from MarineTraffic reveals the vessel's journey from Vila do Conde port, Brazil, to Bandar Imam Khomeini port, Iran.
According to maritime security expert Ambrey, the panamax sustained damage to its starboard side, though no crew were harmed. The Houthis claimed responsibility, stating their naval forces accurately struck the American vessel.
This incident marks the 51st attack on merchant ships since November, following the Houthis' alignment with Palestinians in the Israel-Palestine conflict. The attack, occurring early in the morning, breaks a six-day lull in Red Sea hostilities. Previously, on February 6, another Star Bulk vessel, the Star Nasia kamsarmax, faced minor damage from three missiles.
Arsenio Dominguez, secretary-general of the International Maritime Organization, emphasized a comprehensive approach to resolving the Red Sea shipping crisis. Dominguez stressed the need for heightened ship security, the cessation of hostile actions against seafarers, and regional and international cooperation towards a peaceful resolution.
