On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked a significant milestone in India's infrastructure development by inaugurating the country's inaugural metro line beneath a formidable river in Kolkata. This landmark project underscores India's progress in advancing its transportation networks.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a ride on India's first "underwater Metro tunnel" in Kolkata, West Bengal, which he had inaugurated. During the journey, he interacted with school students who were aboard the nation's first underwater Metro train at the Mahakaran metro station. PM Modi actively engaged in conversations with the students, initially arranging for them to sit beside him before delving into discussions.
Linking Howrah and Salt Lake, the metro service will connect the twin cities of the West Bengal state capital. Among the six stations, three will be situated underground. The train is anticipated to traverse a 520-meter stretch beneath the Hooghly River in a mere 45 seconds.
He also laid the foundation stone of multiple connectivity projects worth Rs 15,400 crore. In addition to the underwater metro, the PM also inaugurated the Kavi Subhash - Hemanta Mukhopadhyay Metro section and the Taratala - Majerhat Metro section, which is part of the Joka-Esplanade line. The Prime Minister also virtually flagged off several other important projects across the country which include Pune Metro's stretch from Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi, the Kochi Metro Rail Phase I Extension from SN Junction Metro station to Tripunithura Metro station, the Agra Metro's stretch from Taj East Gate to Mankameshwar, Pune Metro and Esplanade Metro- Kolkata.
