A Special Missions Unit of the Greek military executed a daring operation, boarding a product tanker on Saturday. Their mission led to the apprehension of the vessel's captain and the liberation of three inspectors allegedly being held against their will. This incident marks the latest twist in the saga of the vessel, which initially faced regulatory issues in September 2023, resulting in an 83-day detention in Germany where 42 deficiencies were uncovered.
According to the Hellenic Coast Guard's report on February 10, the vessel, identified as the Arina 1, was directed to divert its course to the anchorage at Chios. Upon arrival, the Special Missions Unit swiftly boarded the vessel, as depicted in a video released by the Coast Guard, brandishing automatic rifles as they conducted their search.
The detained captain, along with the chief engineer and three individuals claiming captivity, were escorted ashore. Subsequent interrogation led to the captain's arrest on charges of abducting Filipino and Greek engineers who were aboard as inspectors for a buyer. These inspectors revealed that they had been falsely enlisted as crew members, enabling the vessel to evade legal detention and restrictions on European port access.
Originally built in 2002 and managed by a Dubai-based company, the tanker faced multiple deficiencies during inspections, ranging from technical malfunctions to safety concerns. Despite an agreement to proceed to Dubai for repairs, the vessel diverted to Turkey, resulting in a permanent ban by the Paris MoU. Plans for the vessel's sale to Greek interests were thwarted when it was seized for outstanding debts, culminating in the dramatic events off the coast of Chios. As investigations unfold, Greek authorities continue to detain both the vessel and its captain, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
