Ghaziabad, located near Delhi, is poised to be included in the list of renamed places in Uttar Pradesh, following calls from Hindu organizations.
Mayor Sunita Dayal of the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) announced that the three proposed names - Harnandi Nagar, Gaj Prastha, and Doodheshwernath Nagar - will be submitted to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for a final decision.
A BJP councilor presented the proposal yesterday, and the Ghaziabad civic body included it in the agenda for Tuesday's board meeting, as reported by The Times of India. Given the BJP's strong majority in the civic body, it appears that there will be minimal hindrance to the proposed name change.
Mayor Sunita Dayal was quoted in the report stating that although there have been requests for renaming the city for some time, this will mark the first instance of such discussions taking place at the executive level.
Giri stated that these names are associated with the Mahabharata, as contemporary Ghaziabad was once a part of Hastinapur.
Giri asserted that the region was once a thick forest populated by elephants, referred to as 'Gaj' in Hindi. Consequently, Ghaziabad was named Gaj Prastha.
Uttar Pradesh has been at the forefront of renaming places, with one of the most notable changes being the transformation of Allahabad to Prayagraj in 2018. This was followed by a series of subsequent name changes.
