India’s OTT content continues to make waves globally, as the Hindi adaptation of The Night Manager has earned a prestigious nomination at the 2024 International Emmy Awards. This marks a significant achievement for Indian entertainment, as it remains the country’s only entry to the globally recognized awards show this year.
The Night Manager, an adaptation of John le Carré’s famed espionage novel, captivated Indian and international audiences with its high-stakes plot, stylish production, and stellar performances. The series features Bollywood stars Aditya Roy Kapur and Anil Kapoor, who have been widely praised for their portrayals of the lead characters.
Directed by Sandeep Modi, The Night Manager is an intense thriller that follows a hotel employee (played by Aditya Roy Kapur) recruited to infiltrate the inner circle of a dangerous arms dealer (portrayed by Anil Kapoor). With its slick storytelling, sharp dialogues, and gripping performances, the show has struck a chord with both critics and fans, making its International Emmy nomination a fitting recognition.
The Night Manager's opponents in this category include the French program Les Gouttes de Dieu (Drops of God), the Australian series The Newsreader - Season 2, and the Argentine series Iosi, El Espia Arrepentido Season 2.
The series' antagonist Shelly Rungta, played by actor Anil Kapoor, expressed his "ecstatic" reaction to the nomination, calling it a "worthy reminder" that perseverance always pays off. "I recently discovered that our Indian version of The Night Manager has received an International Emmy nomination. I remember being confused when the offer was made. It gave me the chance to portray a role that was so complicated, but it also came with a great deal of responsibility to try to bring something fresh and genuine to a role that Hugh Laurie had performed so brilliantly," the actor stated.
The International Emmys are scheduled for November 25 in New York. Indian comedian Vir Das, who took home a prize for his stand-up special Landing last year, will serve as presenter. Many countries, including Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, India, Chile, Colombia, France, Japan, Germany, and many more, have submitted nominations for International Emmys.
