Emergency first day of box office records: This Friday, Kangana Ranaut's long-awaited debut solo film was released. According to reports, the movie had a slow start but gave Kangana her largest opening in five years following the pandemic.
On Friday, emergency opened to ₹2.35 crore. The film's opening stands at the top of Kangana's solo releases during the last five years. On its first day at the domestic box office, Kangana's last movie, Sarvesh Mewara's 2023 aerial action extravaganza Tejas, brought in ₹1.25 crore. Razneesh Ghai's 2022 action movie Dhaakad brought in ₹1.20 crore on its first day of release.
Before that, AL Vijay's Thalaivii (2021), a political biopic based on the life of the late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, made ₹1.46 crore on its first day of release in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi. Prior to Emergency, her largest opening occurred in January 2020, just before the epidemic closed theatres. The opening gross for Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari's sports drama Panga was ₹2.70 crore.
Ranaut portrays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the political drama, which centres on the 21-month Emergency that lasted from 1975 to 1977. After multiple delays, Emergency, which is controversial due to its censor certificate and claims that movie misrepresents the Sikh community, was made available nationwide on Friday.
With positive word-of-mouth and continued buzz, Emergency is poised for a robust weekend, with trade experts predicting it could cross the ₹20 crore mark in its first three days.
Kangana, celebrating the success, expressed gratitude to her fans. “Emergency is more than a film; it’s a labor of love and an attempt to bring a significant chapter of Indian history to light. The audience’s support is overwhelming,” she said in a statement.
As Emergency continues to make waves, it not only cements Kangana Ranaut’s position as a leading figure in Indian cinema but also sets a benchmark for female-led projects in the industry.
