To demand justice for a 31-year-old woman trainee doctor who was reportedly raped and killed at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, hundreds of thousands of women from West Bengal marched at midnight on Wednesday as part of the "Reclaim the Night" movement. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been urged by West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose to take "convincing actions to alleviate the concerns of the people" who are furious about the RG Kar Hospital rape-murder case.

As part of the protest, homes around the city, its suburbs, and its districts, as well as well-known sites like the Victoria Memorial and Raj Bhavan, went dark at exactly 9 p.m. At the Raj Bhavan, Governor CV Ananda Bose also lit a candle and remarked, "Darkness is dear when light is fear." Berhampore, Chinsurah, Santiniketan, Krishnanagar, Bardhaman, Siliguri, Barasat, Barrackpore, Rajarhat-Newtown, Cooch Behar, and Jalpaiguri were among the important places where the movement extended.

The protest concluded with a candlelight vigil at Esplanade, where participants honored the memory of the victim and renewed their commitment to the fight for safer work places.
