On Tuesday, August 20, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is expected to administer a polygraph test to Sanjoy Roy, the accused in the rape and murder case in Kolkata. Permission to test the accused, a volunteer citizen, who is accused of raping and killing a 31-year-old trainee doctor on August 9 at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was given to the CBI on Monday.
The CBI court got permission to conduct a polygraph test on the accused by a local court, days after the agency conducted a psychoanalysis test on him. The polygraph test will be conducted to further determine the involvement of the accused in the case.Sanjoy Roy is the only person accused because the CBI investigation has not yet turned up any other information about him or the case. The victim's parents, meanwhile, have claimed that the rape was committed by a gang and that several medical staff members were involved.
On Monday, protests against the West Bengal government became more violent as Kolkata Police stepped up their efforts to suppress false information on social media and detained someone for revealing the victim's identity and threatening Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Protests against the junior doctor's rape and murder are still ongoing nationwide as of yet. While out-patient departments experienced a huge surge in demand due to a staff shortage, the doctor's strike in Kolkata is still in effect.
As reports circulate that West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose may meet with President Droupadi Murmu and other top government officials to discuss the case, Bose arrived in Delhi on Monday night. As the investigation progresses, the results of the polygraph test will be closely monitored, with the CBI expected to submit its findings to the court soon. The case continues to be a focal point of public and media scrutiny, with calls for stringent action against those responsible for the crime.
