After a police team took one of the three accused in the gang rape of a 14-year-old girl in Dhing, Assam, for scene re-creation early on Saturday, the accused man allegedly leaped into a pond while wearing handcuffs. He died as a result. The primary suspect, Tafazul Islam, who was taken into custody by the police on Friday, is said to have leaped into a pond to escape.
People in the streets sparked huge protests on Thursday after reports of three people gangraping a 14-year-old girl in Assam's Nagaon district. Before residents could save her and call the police, the girl was found unconscious and hurt by the side of the road next to a pond.
At approximately 8 p.m. on Thursday, the girl was riding her bicycle home from her tuition in the Dhing neighborhood when she was allegedly attacked and sexually molested by three people, according to the police.According to the police, at around 3.30 am, the accused was brought to the scene of the alleged incident to recreate it. The suspect jumped into the pond after escaping from police custody. Following a quick search, his body was found after almost two hours, according to the officials.
