There is good news for alcoholics. Home delivery of liquor may soon be seen in many states of the country. Several Indian states, including Karnataka, Haryana, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Goa, Kerala and Delhi, are considering introducing online home delivery of liquor through Swiggy, Bigbasket, Zomato and Blickint, according to a report. At present, the idea is to start it as a pilot project. According to the report, in the initial phase, home delivery of products with low alcohol content, such as beer, wine and liquor, will be approved.
At present, the authorities are evaluating the pros and cons of the move, the report said. At present, home delivery of liquor is allowed only in 2 states of the country - West Bengal and Odisha.
"The move is being considered in view of the changing food habits of people, especially in big cities," the report quoted an official as saying. A large population of consumers consume these medium-quality alcohol products as a form of entertainment. At the same time, it will also cater to women and senior citizens, who do not prefer to shop from traditional liquor shops and storefront experiences."
During the Covid-19 lockdown, home delivery of liquor was temporarily allowed with restrictions in Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh Jharkhand and Assam. According to the report, the home delivery of liquor during the lockdown in these states was successful despite all the temporary restrictions. Retail industry officials said that due to online delivery, West Bengal and Odisha had seen a 20 to 30 per cent jump in sales at that time.
