India to Finalize Predator Armed Drone Deal with US by October 31

Although the Ministry is silent on the procedure, it has been reported that the Cost Negotiation Committee (CNC) has finalized the acquisition price.

India to Finalize Predator Armed Drone Deal with US by October 31

India is set to finalize a significant defense agreement with the United States for the acquisition of Predator armed drones before October 31, 2024. The deal, expected to bolster India's military capabilities, marks a major step in the strategic partnership between the two nations. Following the July 30 approval of the Predator drone purchase by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), the Defense Ministry will shortly approach the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) for the acquisition, which is expected to be signed next month.

The Cost Negotiation Committee (CNC) has finalized the acquisition price for US-based General Atomics, which is estimated to be worth USD 3.1 billion. The Ministry has not commented on the process. To obtain final CCS stamp clearance, the Defence Ministry will now approach the Finance Ministry for expenditure permission. The manufacturer reserves the right to revise the purchase price if the acquisition is not signed by October 31.

The government of PM Modi is buying 31 MQ 9B drones from General Atomics equipped with laser-guided bombs and air-to-surface missiles. Of the 31 drones, 16 will support the Indian Navy in maintaining maritime security in the Indo-Pacific, eight will be assigned to the Indian Army, and the final eight will be used by the Indian Air Force to conduct specialized strike missions over land borders.

The MQ-9B drones, which are an upgraded version of the MQ-9 Reaper, are capable of carrying out long-endurance missions and can be equipped with a variety of precision-guided munitions. The drones are expected to be deployed across different terrains, including high-altitude areas and coastal regions.

This deal also reflects the growing defense cooperation between India and the United States, which has been strengthened through initiatives such as the Quad partnership and bilateral defense agreements. The acquisition of these drones is expected to further deepen military ties between the two countries.

As the October 31 deadline approaches, the focus will be on ensuring that all technical and logistical aspects of the deal are addressed, allowing for the timely delivery and deployment of the drones.

The purchase of these advanced drones is seen as a crucial move in India's ongoing efforts to enhance its defense capabilities, ensuring that the nation remains well-prepared to address any emerging security threats.
