Biotique: Bridging Ancient Traditions and Modern Skincare

Biotique is a renowned Indian beauty and wellness brand that has made a significant mark in the natural beauty space. Since its inception in 1992, Biotique has focused on combining the ancient science of Ayurveda with modern biotechnology. This fusion of tradition and innovation has allowed the brand to offer a range of skincare, haircare, and wellness products that emphasize purity, sustainability, and effective results. Known for its commitment to nature-based solutions, Biotique has become a favorite among those seeking holistic beauty treatments rooted in centuries-old herbal knowledge.

Rise of Biotique

Historically, health and beauty were regarded as ephemeral. The average life expectancy of an adult was approximately 30 years. Humans permit nature to exert its influence. Over 5000 years ago, Aryan sages explored the abundant resources of nature to prolong ephemeral health and beauty across a lifetime. Originating in Asia several millennia before to the erection of the pyramids. Ayurveda derives from two Sanskrit roots: “Ayur,” signifying life, and “Veda,” denoting science or knowledge. Ayurveda is typically translated as the "Science of Life."

Ayurveda has unveiled the secret of perpetual youth. It is the sole system globally that has meticulously addressed the issues of aging. They observed that specific combinations of herbs can maintain not just youthful skin and hair but also a toned physique. To this day, there are individuals aged 70 to 80 who possess the youthful vitality of a 35-year-old. They adhere to the principles of Ayurveda.

Biotique was founded by Vinita Jain in 1992. Vinita Jain grew up in Kolkata and was a frequent visitor to her grandparent’s plantations in the hills of Assam and Darjeeling.  This is where she learnt the ancient science of Ayurveda, from Sanskrit texts in Samhitas. Her first lessons were from the “Himalayan gurus” who dwelt in the caves of her family’s tea estates. She helped her family and their gurus plant medicines at home and supplying them to workers, as there was no hospital nearby. The nearest hospital back then was 500 miles away. Vineeta did her bachelors from University of Delhi and then her masters from Stanford University and after her education in marketing and biotechnology, she combined all her childhood knowledge of the ancient Vedas and founded Biotique. With the initial investment of Rs 10 crore, Jain established the organization. The products are manufactured in Himachal Pradesh but are available across the globe. Vinita has grown her company to a Rs 600 crore business.

Biotique is a zero debt, 100% privately owned company. The company has supported its expansion through internal accruals, notwithstanding private equity players' interest. With revenue increasing 40–45% annually, Biotique has the ability to sustain such growth. The company is valued at $1.5 billion for financial year ended 2017. Its R&D investments were Rs. 450 crore over the last few years.

Ayurveda Meets Modern Science

The cornerstone of Biotique’s offerings is Ayurveda, an ancient Indian system of holistic healing that dates back over 5,000 years. The brand’s products draw inspiration from Ayurvedic texts and utilize time-honored ingredients such as neem, turmeric, bhringraj, honey, and sandalwood. These ingredients are known for their healing, nourishing, and rejuvenating properties.

Philosophy and Core Principles

BIOTIQUE epitomizes rigorous skin and hair care derived from Ancient Ayurveda. It encapsulates the traditions of ancient sages that have been transmitted through generations. These ancient Sages, sometimes referred to as Rishis, found that herbs and their extracts had a remarkable impact on skin and hair. The lifestyle of these Rishis embodies the essence of BIOTIQUE.

At the heart of Biotique’s philosophy is the belief that beauty and wellness are interconnected. The brand champions the idea that skin and hair can achieve their fullest potential by embracing the natural balance offered by Ayurveda. By using botanical extracts, pure essential oils, and traditional Ayurvedic herbs, Biotique creates formulations that are free from harmful chemicals, synthetic ingredients, and preservatives.
