Ustad Rashid Khan-Maestro of Melody, Passes Away After Battle with Prostate Cancer

Rashid Khan gave performances at prestigious events and music gatherings worldwide. They solidified his status as a master of Hindustani classical music. He gave his voice to the popular Bollywood song ‘Aaoge Jab Tum Sajna’ from ‘Jab We Met’. He is the recipient of India’s highest civilian awards Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.

Renowned Indian classical vocalist Ustad Rashid Khan died on 9 January 2024, aged 55, bid farewell to the world after a prolonged battle with prostate cancer. The maestro had been under treatment at a Kolkata-based hospital, where he succumbed to the illness at the age of 55.

 

Ustad Rashid Khan was renowned for his soulful compositions. Throughout his career, he was recognized for his contributions to Indian classical music with a number of honors and awards, including the Padma Shri and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. His performances took place at esteemed concerts and music festivals all over the world. They cemented his reputation as a Hindustani classical music maestro. 

 

Ustad Rashid Khan's musical journey began in his childhood under the guidance of his uncle, Ustad Ghulam Mustafa, in Mumbai. Hailing from the illustrious musical gharana of Rampur-Sahaswan, Khan's roots trace back to the culturally rich city of Budaun in Uttar Pradesh, where he was born.

 

The late maestro received his primary training from Ustad Nisar Khan at his residence in Budaun, laying the foundation for a remarkable career in classical music. Ustad Rashid Khan's mastery over the intricacies of classical ragas and his soulful renditions made him a revered figure in the world of Indian classical music. 

 

Rashid Khan was a member of the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana and the grandson of Inayat Hussain Khan, the founder of the gharana. He was married to Soma Khan.

 

Among his numerous achievements, Ustad Rashid Khan was widely celebrated for his rendition of the soul-stirring melody "Aaoge Jab Tum O Sajna" from the Bollywood film "Jab We Met." His contribution to both classical and contemporary music left an indelible mark on the hearts of music enthusiasts globally.

 

The influence of Ustad Rashid Khan goes far beyond his stage appearances. In addition, he had been actively involved in nurturing and instructing upcoming musicians as well as helping to preserve and advance Hindustani classical music for upcoming generations.
